The ten commandments were give to us to follow and be the basis of our daily lives for us to avoid committing sins. When you know that you committed a sin, and you became aware of it, it is a manifestation that you are attached with your conscience. Specially when you are doing examination of conscience before going to sleep. This is a practice where you think about the things that you did for the whole day. It is also the time when you can ask for God's forgiveness before going to sleep. The ten commandments is our conscience rules and regulations which became our guide each day. As catholic it is our obligation also to know and put it in our hearts.
