Definition:

There are two main types of seismic waves, these are:
Body waves. These refer to the vibrations that travel through the interior of the earth.
Surface waves. These refer to vibrations that travel at the surface of the earth.
Subtypes and Its Characteristics:
Body waves
P waves or primary waves. These push rocks in the direction they are travelling and they travel in all states of matter.
S waves or secondary waves. These displace rocks at right angles to the direction they are travelling and cannot pass through liquids.
Surface waves
Love waves. These move faster among the other waves and move the ground from side-to-side to the direction the wave is travelling.
Rayleigh waves. These have also a horizontal particle and travel over the surface of solids.
