ACTIVITY 1. ANALYSIS AND REASONING Directions: Answer the following questions, in 2-3 sentences, about the pieces of evidence in plate movements. Write your answers on a separate sheet of paper 1. FOSSIL RECORDS 3. Ir lystosaunus and mesosaurus are freshwater reptiles and cynognathus is a land reptile, explain why the fossils of lystosaurus, mesosaurus, and cynognathus are found in places that are oceans apart? b. Can freshwater animals travel in saltwater? If no, explain why the fossils of lystosaurus, mesosaurus, and cynognathus are found in places that are oceans apart? c. Can tropical plants like glossopteris survive in Antarctica? If no, why are there fossils of glossopteris found in Antarctica? d. Suggest an idea that will explain the presence of fossils in places that are oceans Apart. e. Given this reasoning, can we consider these fossil records as pieces of evidence that plates are moving? Sagot :

Answer:

Evidence of Continental Drift

Here are some of the evidences supporting the continental drift theory:

Fossil – fossils of Mesosaurus, Cynognathus, Lystrosaurus, and the plant Glossopteris, were distributed equally among the southern continents.

Coastline matching – the coastlines of South America and Africa looks like a perfect fit, just like a jigsaw puzzle.

Paleomagnetism – it shows the orientation of magnetic minerals, like magnetite. These minerals change their orientation if the magnetic north moves in an event called the geomagnetic reversal.

Age, Heat and Magnetic orientation – additional evidences that support the continental drift theory is the age of the sampled materials, their magnetic orientation, and their heat sources.

Earthquakes and Volcanoes – the areas near subduction zones, rift, mid-oceanic ridges, collision zones, and transition zones experiences a lot of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
