It would be useless to learn the Filipino language when you will be studying Visayans or Mindanaoans. Yes, learning the national Filipino language can be helpful in basic communication because most Filipinos are taught the national language in school and can communicate adequately in that language. But you get more nuance when you learn the local language of the sector of Filipino society you are trying to study.
