Mathematical expressions is a combination of symbols that is well formed on the text. This can be a designate number, variables, functions or brackets.On the other hand, mathematical equation is a statement indicating the equality of two expressions. There are two kinds of equation: identities and conditional equations. An equation is written by a equals sign.
Examples of Mathematical Expressions:
In this expression, the coefficient of x is number 2, so it means 2 times x plus 3.
Sometimes a dot, an asterisk or parentheses may be used instead.
The squaring operation is applied to the variable x. In this case, the expression has coefficient of 3.
Another example of mathematical expressions:
- Arithmetic Operations- basic kind of mathematical expression. It consist of operations such as addition, multiplication, subtraction and division. Example: 9 + 14 / 2 - 6* (5+3) = 32
- Functions- this consist numbers, variables and operations. Example: 2x + 7 = 13 , the value of x is 3.
- Summations- all the elements were add together . These are represented by sigma Σ .
Example: if A= {1, 2, 3, 4], Σ(A) = 1+2+3+4, which is equal to 10.
Examples of Mathematical Equation:
- 4 + 6 = 10
- 4a - 3b = 1
- ex + y = -2
Example of solved equation:
7x + 8 = 1 , find the value of x.
solution:
step 1: 7x + 8 = 1
step 2: subtract 8 from each side, so we get 7x = -7
step 3: divide both sides by -7, so we get x = -1.
