In 4/4 time a whole note gets FOUR beats; a half note gets TWO beats, and a quarter note gets ONE beat. Based on what you saw above, that 4/4 time signatures mean four beats to the measure and the quarter note gets the beat.

This bottom number is relative to the whole note.
For example, if the bottom number is a 2, we work out 'whole note divided by 2' which gives us two half notes. So when the bottom number of a time signature is a 2, the beats are half note beats.
