Answer: Back in the days when the phone was the phone and a computer was a computer, there was a very distinct separation of these technologies, and they usually only crossed paths when someone was using a dial-up connection for the internet.

When the idea of VoIP was first introduced, certain carriers started using the technology across under-used internet lines in order to offer cheaper long distance calls. Skype was probably the first obvious crossing of the two technologies from a user perspective. It’s just a shame how M$ has ruined what was once a very simple P2P (Peer to Peer) utility. The only time a server was needed was to locate the user one was calling. Now that it’s all server-based and overloaded with unused features, there is definitely a market for a replacement of the MK 1 version to be released all over again.

Does anyone remember Cross Loop? This was a simple P2P screen sharing utility that was totally free. That plus original Skype was all that was needed to perform remote work on someone else’s machine. Now Skype and TeamViewer are dominant, and both offer too many conflicting features, so I don’t honestly know where the division between communication and information is anymore.
