Most folk dances were inventions to certain kinds if popular music that had catchy melodies and basic rhythms that many people could dance to with relative ease and allowed some interaction between the sexes and chances to show off coordination. They allowed for some socialization and flirtation between the sexes.

Ballet and ballroom dancing require more physical coordination and strength and are stylized to display those qualities. They do tend to require above average strength and coordination. I preferred to do dances like the boogie woogie and jitterbug when I was young and athletic and enjoyed a faster beat to dance to.
