Modern dance is called modern is because the dance is improved or made by the people in present-day. It's called modern is because modern dances are new dances which is called "modern" and old dances are called well, old and renaissance dances. Dances in the past is cultured and have steps to follow while modern dance have a sense of freedom and anyone can make it their own. Some dances in the past have added new steps to improve it to make it more "modern" like ballet, since it is improved they called it "modern-day ballet" or "modern ballet". (Sorry for the bad grammar)
