Imelda "Steel Butterfly" R. Marcos was born on July 2. 1929 in Manila,
Philippines. She is the daughter of Vicente Orestes Romualdez and Remedios T
Romualdez, and a niece of the late Norberto A Romualdez She is a Filipino socialite,
politician and congresswoman who herame the first lady of the Philippines for 21
years. She graduated from St. Paul's College of Tacloban with a degree in Education
in 1952. She also learned several languages although her biggest hobby is the lyric
art. She entered a number of beauty pageants, and was crowned 'Rose of Tacloban". In 1950, she
moved to Manila and worked in music stores and began taking voice lessons at the University of
Santo Tomas. She became popular with the students and the crowds as she was believed to be an
extremely gifted singer. It was also during this time when she was crowned Miss Philippines. In
1953, she appeared on a number of magazine covers and her popularity increased
She was named the "Muse of Manila" by the Mayor of the Philippines. She also got
the Miss Universe 1974 pageant organized in Manila in a large auditorium with a capacity of 10,000
which was constructed in less than 3 months at her behest. She significantly influenced her husband's
career, especially since she was appointed Head of the Department of Human settlements, Governor
of Metropolitan Manila, head of list by the capital by the party of Marcos in the elections for the
Interim ecembly and, in 1982, Member of the Executive Committee at the nation. As the first lady,
Imelda met a number of world leaders, from the US President Lyndon B. Johnson to Cuban leader,
Fidel Castro
She sought parliamentary opportunities for herself in addition to supporting her spouse
with his duties. She backed a number of social programs in the country including the short-lived
national family planning program and established the Manila Film Center, the Cultural Center
in the mid-1970s, Marcos served as the Governor of the Metro Manila area She systematized many
costly remodelling and development projects and later served in the Provisional National Assembly
as the minister of human settlements.
She won her first election in the mid-1990s as a member of the House of the
Representatives- a position she held for
